While Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle may give a very poor first impression upon playing it for the first time, give it a chance, and it might just grow on you. STORY: 5/10 (7.5/10, if you're a Touhou fan) The story mode is a cute, but short series of character interactions with battles mixed in between. It's certainly nothing amazing, but if you're a fan of Touhou, you'll no doubt have fun playing through your favorite girl's story. It's important to note that every character has their own story to play through, but given that the roster is so small (featuring 9 characters + 1 DLC character), it won't take long to complete all of them. CHARACTERS: 7/10 The grand majority of the characters come from Touhou 6, which I had no problem with, since that's my personal favorite. The character lists consists of: Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya, Remilia, Flandre, Hong Meiling, Patchouli, Cirno,. The 7th game in the Touhou series. It expands gameplay compared to the 6th by providing a third playable character and 2 extra stages. You can obtain the version patch from the official site (some google translate required), and the English patch from various fan sites. The version patch needs to be installed with the system locale set to Japan, but the English patch does not. ![]() ![]() I installed the English patch after returning to US locale to follow the method I used for installing Imperishable Night. Once the English patch is in, the Japan locale is no longer needed. I happen to think this is a great mystery dungeon game. Compared to something like Etrian Mystery Dungeon I think it's actually quite a bit more polished system wise with simple but addicting game play. A word about the somewhat unique system of the game. Every time you enter a dungeon you start at level 1. This is regardless of whether you cleared the previous dungeon or died etc. You level up very quickly so this is in place to prevent you from becoming way too powerful after repetitively grinding a lot of content, and this game does have a lot of grinding for sure. On the other hand, your gears have levels as well and those are not lost upon death or clearing of dungeons (but some challenge dungeons forbid bringing gears). In addition, there are a lot of ways for you to customize your gears, like enhancements or seals. Oh my, what a fantastic take on the roguelike genre. I've put in 30hours into the game and only cleared the first story section, one out of many. There are also bonus dungeons and a fairly lengthy DLC episode that's at least a 10-15hour adventure. I'm having so much fun with no signs of slowing down, constantly progressing with better and better weapons/skills and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface with the insanely powerful equipment setups. The difficulty is very fair so far, even for someone who's kind of bad at these games. It's not easy, but also not frustrating enough to put me off. The difficulty so far is just perfectly balanced. I've tried some of the super hard, optional Lunatic dungeons. It seems there's definitely content that will challenge the hardcore fans of the genre. It's a shame the backgrounds look so bad, because the character sprites are. It's a Touhou game. You'll know exactly what it is if you go watch a couple videos. Have some fun dodging bullets.
